Adding Testimonials Creates Validity and More

Testimonials are excellent for building consumer confidence in your products and/or services. New customers feel more confident about their decision to purchase from you if you have testimonials on your site. They get the impression that they are a part of a group and that they are not just another sale.

Your brand is validated when visitors to your business website witness actual clients advocating and singing praises about your products and/or services. When they see how others are putting your products to good use or how much they enjoy your services, they too will understand how it can benefit them, too.

Most of the time, testimonials are in the form of text with accompany pictures of the client’s logo, or of the client themselves. Exceptionally powerful are video testimonials. They appeal to everyone, especially those who don’t have the time to read paragraphs of text. They also create a type of social proof that helps your personal branding.

You can have videos of clients using your products and/or services while praising it. To get these video testimonials from clients, encourage them to talk about the way your product and/or service has helped them solve their problem.

In every testimonial, you must include (at least) the following:

Customer’s Name and Title
Location
Credentials

Here are some tips for the use of testimonials:

Get testimonials from both genders, unless your product and/or service is gender-specific
Have some diversity in the demographics for your testimonials; for example age, ethnicity, etc
Get testimonials from various areas; if your product and/or service is used in a variety of different ways or industries.

Remember to always get permission from the person to use their testimonial before publishing it. Keep a copy of the permission for reference.

This is a very important part of your digital marketing plan, and especially of your business. As you implement each digital marketing task, you need to test and track the performance of each digital marketing effort.

This is to help you see clearly what’s working and what is not. Only then will you be able to make the informed decision to do more of what is working, and less of what is not working.

You need to track your business website rankings for the different keywords. This will tell you where each keyword ranks. By knowing this, you have a better idea of ranking possibilities for the content you put out there using that keyword.

You can also use rank checker tools to assist you with tracking rankings for keywords. If possible, it is a good idea to check the rankings for keywords of your competitors.

Links and Backlinks

When you are testing the backlinks of your business website to make sure they are actually working, you should also find out where the links are coming from. You should track how many backlinks there are, and how many are recognized by Google.

Do the same for your competitors, especially those who already have a good degree of online domination. You can learn from them, and get ideas where you need to link from. To facilitate the process, use link and backlink tracking tools.

Traffic Sources, and Volume

You need to track and optimize traffic sources and volume. This data can tell you where your visitors are coming from, and the number of visitors you are getting from each source.

It is important to know if a visitor is a direct visitor, or is he or she referred from natural search engine results, or referred from other sites, or referred through paid search engine ads. This type of tracking will also reveal the keywords that are working, that are getting visitors to drop by your business website.

There are traffic tracking tools available for this; such as Google Analytics.

Visitor Data

This is another data set that needs to be tested, tracked and optimized regularly. The reasons are many; you want to know where they are located, what browsers they use, the type of operating system they use, the type of devices they use, the connection speeds, and if they are new visitors or repeat visitors.

This will help you create the best visitor experience possible for your guests. Also, it will help you tweak your digital marketing plan to suit their needs.

Visitor Actions and Behavior

This is valuable information that can tell you how well your business website, landing pages and other content are working for you. This is because you will discover stuff like which page did your visitor arrived at, and from which page did they exit?

You can also find out how long they stayed on your site? Information such as these can help you think of your visitor’s motivation; For example, why did they leave from that particular page? Did they find what they were looking for? How can you entice them to stay longer at your site?

Take note of the links that gets you the most click-through traffic. This will help you find out what information attracts your visitors the most.

One of the most important features of tracking visitor behavior is what is sometimes termed as ‘the final click’. What did they actually do at your business website? Did they take action, and made a purchase? There are a variety of technologies that allow you to track such information.

By regularly testing and tracking, by collecting important data, you will gather valuable information, you will be equipped to optimize your digital marketing plan, and get the best results possible. You will finally know what is working well, and what is not.

That which is not working well can be removed or tweaked. It is by your discernment of what the data actually means that you can make these changes; for example change of content or site adjustments.

It is easy to place these ads. Just put an advertisement in the sections or categories that best fit the products and/or services that your business provides. Many of these online classified ads websites allow you to place links directly back to your business website. The sheer volume of traffic on such sites will enable people to find your business more readily.

Get maximum mileage from your online classified ads by creating links to your ad using social bookmarking sites and other social networking sites. Doing so will create additional backlinks to your ad that will get it ranked higher in the search engines.

As mentioned before, and mentioned here again, any content that is ranked in the search engines is excellent news for your digital marketing.

As always, just like all your other online content, ensure that your online classified ads are search engine friendly. Again, use keywords correctly and accurately.

Avoid stuffing them into your ads. You should place these ads monthly to stay current in the search engines. Vary the content to keep it fresh. Add seasonal specials when appropriate.

Local Online Discussion Forums

Participating actively in local online discussion forums can be another way to reach even more potential new customers. Online discussion forums are where people discuss topics of interest and issues. Many seek out these forums for information to a need they currently have, or solutions to problems that they are facing.

First, pay close attention to the forum rules. You don’t want to break any, and be blacklisted
Most forums frown on blatant advertising. Do not do this
Once you understand the above two points, you can start conversations or contribute to threads in a relevant way
Use an anchor text keyword in your signature

Offsite audio also provides backlinks to your site. This counts as content that can help your site’s ranking in search engines. Thus, it is in your best interest to put offsite audios on podcasts, online radio shows, or other forms of distribution.

You should create a title, for your audio, with your chosen keyword phrase when submitting your audio to various sites. Use the same keyword in the segment description. There are many tools available that can help you facilitate the use of your audio in your digital marketing strategy.

The above was reported by Forbes in 2013, and since then this has proven true. The report said that social media will evolve from ‘should have’ to ‘must have’.

Already, businesses are realizing that they need to integrate their social media efforts with their overall marketing strategy. Many businesses are seeing the impact of social media in terms of lead generation, referral traffic and increase in revenue.

The benefits of social media are many, and they include the following:

Create strong branding
Increase brand exposure and brand awareness
Improves social signals (which is a factor in search ranking algorithm)
Enhances buzz marketing; also known as word-of-mouth advertising
Increase customer loyalty and trust
Improve audience reach and influence

Of all the social media networks currently available, you should definitely be on Facebook, Google+, Instagram and Twitter at the very least. These social networks are very important digital marketing tools that can help businesses create a strong online presence.

However, to achieve that you need to post updates on each social network regularly. Some believe posts must be done daily. That is all right as it doesn’t hurt the brand, unless you are posting irrelevant topics.

For me, I believe in quality postings. And I find that, while it is all right to post daily initially, in time it is more efficient to post during times when most of your fans or followers are online. After all, it is best to fish in the area where and when there are most fishes, right?

After some time, after studying data analytics and insights, you may discover that these optimum times could be just 3 to 4 times a week, these would be specific days and timings when a majority of your fans and followers are online, and watching your Facebook Page, Google+, Instagram or Twitter accounts.

Even then, it takes a lot of time and effort just to do research and find interesting and relevant topics to post. After all, you don’t just always post about your products and services. While people who are your fans and followers are interested in your products and services, they are also interested in news and information related to the field and industry your products and services are within.

And to gather a constant flow of such news and services, besides just information about your products and services, can be daunting. Don’t forget you need to do copywriting.

Don’t just share an online article without adding your own thoughts to it. Social media is about engaging people. You need to write copy that is interesting and engages your fans and followers. Especially when you want them to take action and lead them to your website or make a purchase.

Also, not all photos look great. So you will need to know a bit of digital imaging to make photos look good enough to capture your audience’s attention.

Remember, your posts will be on your fans and followers’ newsfeed. You need to catch their attention amongst all other postings on their newsfeed. And surveys have found that posts with photos or videos definitely capture people’s attention.

I know all this can be intimidating. Especially for those who are short on time and resources, or who isn’t a fan of social networking. But if you want your digital marketing strategy to be successful, you need to be on social media, and be regularly active on the aforementioned networks. An alternative is to outsource to a digital marketing expert or firm, which is a good idea as you can leverage on their expertise.

When building your social networks, be sure to also engage with your fans and followers. They will interact with you, and leave comments. Be sure to reply to their comments. Even if there are negative comments, do reply.

Take this opportunity to clarify points, convert people to customers, and build good PR and brand that will give a good impression to the public as well as your existing customers. Blogging is one of the repeated tasks that does take up a lot of time, effort and resources. Yet, it is easier and faster to produce compared to articles and press releases. Blogs can be shorter than an article, and has fewer guidelines than a press release.

Do take note that you should apply SEO techniques for maximum effectiveness.

For example, you should focus on keywords, especially long-tail keywords. At the same time, be careful not to stuff keywords into the text. There should be a natural flow to the style of writing.

Also, write in a way that people will enjoy reading your blog, and will want to keep coming back to it. The best is when they like it so much that they subscribe to your RSS feed.

Keep your blog posts within 800 – 2,000 words

Of course, do not be too restricted by this tip. Write naturally, and let the length be how much it should be. This tip is just a guide.

Scheduling a post is very subjective. It all depends on the industry you are in. At the same time, it is ideal for your blog to have a new post on a regular basis.

Start with releasing a new post every 3 days. Monitor the response. Then try to post more often, and see if this schedule attracts more people.

Relevance

Your blog should be relevant to the latest news, happenings and events in the world. Especially if you are in an industry that follows trends, do keep up with it, and keep your blog trendy.

There are ways to draw and increase traffic to your business website using blogs. You can create more back links when you submit your offsite blog posts to social networking and social news sharing sites.

The Importance of Blog Comments

Your blog offers an opportunity to interact with your customers, and people interested in your product and/or service. Those who make comments are likely to be existing customers or potential customers.

Remember this is your business blog. Keep your responses professional, polite and friendly.

You must always answer all valid questions, reply to comments, and even respond to complaints. The way you handle negative comments and complaints speaks volumes to all watching and following your blog.

First thing to note – do not delete negative comments or complaints. They are also feedback from your customers, and you can learn a lot from these negative comments and complaints, which is very valuable. Your next big product or service could be waiting to be discovered in the feedback.

When people share with you the little things that bother them most about your product and/or service, or what they would like as an ideal addition to it, you are receiving free advice on how to create a new and improved version of your product and/or service, or invent a totally new one. This interaction allows you to garner valuable knowledge that can help your business grow.

But be careful.

It is an ideal method to get a message across to a large audience. More importantly, it is very cost effective, more so than advertising on print or TV. Plus, mass media often has a lot of wastage. Video Marketing can be a form of targeted marketing.

There are a wide variety of options when creating your video. One of which is to educate through the use of slides. It is just like a live presentation. The information is displayed like a slideshow while a narrator explains in further details.

As explained in the Blogging chapter, make good use of graphics and photos to give your video a great visual effect. Sometimes, sound effects and music can add that extra touch to your video, making it entertaining while being informative.

Another option is to use an actual video clip or edit video clips into an entire video. You may also consider combining the use of slides with video clips, too.

A lot of people are busy, and always on the go. Hence, they have very little time to read mass amounts of text. They would rather watch a short video.

Use it to get rankings for multiple keywords.
Use it to spice up external landing pages, and Web 2.0 digital properties.

It is not that complicated to create quality video. But it does require a lot of time, and some knowledge. Do consider a video production company, or have your digital marketing firm add this as part of your digital marketing strategy. This way, you can save time and focus on your business while leveraging on their expertise.

There are various ways to deal with these tasks that repeat. One of the ways is for you to do them yourself. Another is to delegate to one of your staff.

The best way is actually to subcontract them to a third party who specializes in digital marketing. By hiring experts in this field, you can tap on their expertise. This is especially useful and time saving since this is digital marketing is constantly evolving.

The experts will naturally be always on their toes, and be always updated. This takes up a lot of time and effort. You or your staff may not have the time and resources to be continually updated, unless your staff is specially hired for this role.

And now, to maintain that success, to keep your local business results and your natural search results ranked high, you must constantly monitor and update this.

Local business results can impact your business significantly. More traffic will flow to your business website. And as a result, your phone will start ringing more frequently, bringing more business to you.

I have clients who bemoan that their phones hardly ring, even after months of setting up their businesses. Little did they know that they need to be listed in the local business results. It is because their phone number will be listed in the same local business results.

Once their business is successfully located at the top of these results, people will start calling, inquiring with interest to make a purchase from them. The same can happen for you when you do the same strategy.

And what is this marketing strategy? It is simple. Just submit your business details to the three major local business results sites. When you secure top spots on these sites, do monitor and update your listings regularly, and make sure they are search engine-optimized.

Here are the three major local business results sites that you must be on:

Google My Business

This is, without a doubt, the most important local business result site to be on. Google owns slightly more than two-thirds of online traffic. Hence, being on Google My Business is vital to your success.

Bing

Bing was launched in May 2009 as a fundamental upgrade from Microsoft’s previous efforts into search – MSN Search. It is growing in importance, and hence secures its place as the second major local business results site that businesses must consider.

They are typically placed below local searches with map, and paid search results. Most people would consider these to be the most valid type of search results.

It is possible to achieve a variety of listings in the natural results. To be included in natural results, you must have relevant content, especially content that has been search engine-optimized.

The reason why Email Marketing works can be easily seen in the Infographic above. But kindly allow me to add to it.

Email Marketing is the second most effective online marketing tactic. The potential reach is huge. There are 4.3 billion email accounts, and more opening every day. In that large number of email accounts is your target audience.

When your target audience is interested in your product, service or information, they will give permission for you to send them emails on a regular basis. They become Subscribers of your emails, which can be newsletters, promotional offers, and so on. As indicated in the Infographic above, 77% of Consumers prefer email for Marketing Communications. And that is a very encouraging number.

Speaking of target market, here is another reason why Email Marketing works. The email list you build can be segmented. Some of your subscribers may have particular interests. And by segmenting, you can customize certain functions or features of your product or service that matches those particular interests.

This will increase the chances of your email being read, and can lead to higher conversions, too. Look at the part in the Infographic that says 44% who received targeted emails admit at least one purchase because of the promotional message.

For example, a hotel may have a special package for families on a particular weekend. They can target the particular segment of subscribers who are married with children. If the subscriber is someone with family and looking for a package deal getaway, chances are he or she will open the email, and click on the offer.

Another good reason why Email Marketing works is because the ROI (Return on Investment) can be easily tracked. What is the percentage of your subscribers who open your emails? How many click on the Call to Action link? How many eventually make the purchase? All that can be tracked, and the ROI is quite exact and accurate.

Email Converts 3 Times Better Than Social Media

For Email Marketing, the ROI that businesses are most interested in are Open Rates, Click Rates and Conversion Rates. What are these ROI? Well, Open Rate is simply the percentage of subscribers who open the email when they received it.

Click Rate is when they click on the Call to Action link presented in the email. This shows that the subscriber is interested in the information or offer, and would like to find out more.

Finally, there is the Conversion Rate is when the subscriber makes a confirmed purchase. Conversions can be simply going to the website to read an article, or accepting an invite for an event, or making a purchase. For example, it can be actually buying a product online, and payment has been made.

The Infographic above shows the average rates for each ROI, and for different types of emails. This is very useful. You can use the data to gauge how successful your campaign is.

Should the campaign not reach the average rates or your expected ROI, you can refine your Email Strategy. It will help you as you test and find out what works, and what does not. The goal is to eventually run successful campaigns.

As can be seen from the image above, for example, when the subject line of an email has movie titles or song lyrics, the Email Open Rates increased by 26.2%. For example, one of the email campaigns that I ran with the subject title as ‘DC Comics Super Heroes Cafe‘ had an Open Rate of 57.1%, which is much higher than the average.

Get Your Website Ranked First Page On Google – Just Like Mine

My website, this website – timotheuslee.com – has reached Page One on Google and other search engines. Wouldn’t you like to Get Your Website Ranked First Page on Google and other search engines too?

This is not the first website that I ranked on 1st Page of search engines. In the past I ranked for other clients’ sites and my digital marketing agency – OOJO – which is still ranking on 1st page for many keywords. For example, I managed to get OOJO on First Page of Google, and till today, they are still on that much sought after position. Speaking of positions, in fact, OOJO now ranks for multiple keywords and many are not only on the first page, they are also ranking at number one.

So what happens after your website achieves 1st Page? How will it benefit your business? What will this coveted space mean for your brand? This will all be discussed further down the article.

But before that, let me show you some of the screen shots of the winning ranking position my website has gained.

Rank on First Page on Google

I will be honest with you. It took eight months for my website to reach first page on Google. On Yahoo and Bing, it was a little faster. It took only three months.

It would have been faster on Google, but I was busy with training, delivering talks at seminars and conferences as well as doing digital marketing projects for clients. Despite a very heavy work schedule, I did manage to spend as much free time as I can doing SEO for my website. So, achieving first page in eight months is quite good, don’t you agree?

A lot of effort was put into getting this website to the 1st page. There was, of course, On Page SEO, which includes title tags, headers and more.

And of course, let us not forget Off Page SEO that included Social Media Marketing to create Social Signals, back links from directory listings and other sites, and many other Off Page tactics.

Not to forget the important strategy to keep creating content. Google and other search engines love fresh content. And this post is just another fresh content for them to relish.

Totally Worth The Journey

I started doing SEO (Search Engine Optimization) on this website in November 2016. As with any website that I am working on, I started with Keyword Research. And chose the best keyword phrase that has good amount of traffic and medium competition. This is the same that I will do for all my clients.

After selection of the keyword phrase, next was On Page SEO. Careful placement of the keywords at the right places, in the right amounts was required. We do not want to be doing Keyword Stuffing, right?

Next was Off Page SEO that took a longer time. As mentioned above, one of the tactics was to get back links. One way was to find relevant directories and get listed on them.

Back links, in itself, is quite extensive. It is not just about getting listed on directories. There are many ways to get back links. For example, guest blogging on other sites and getting a back link from that, participating in forums and crediting your participation with a back link, and many more.

Then there is Social Media where you can generate Social Signals that will indicate to the search bots that your website or brand is relevant and popular. Plus many more other Off Page SEO strategies.

There are a lot more Off Page strategies, and it would take a whole article or many articles to write about them all. I have written some on my blog. And will write and share more. So do remember to subscribe to my newsletter to get updates.

Rewards of Ranking on First Page

Throughout this website, especially on topics about SEO and Online Visibility, I would reiterate the many Rewards of Ranking on First Page. For one, there will definitely be an increase in traffic. A live example here is my website reaching the first page, and the traffic has grown significantly, and is still growing.

When there is higher traffic to your website, it means more people are finding your website and visiting it. This is an opportunity to get them to leave behind a contact, usually an email address.

As you collect more email addresses, you are growing your list of subscribers. This list is very valuable. Take time to nurture your followers. And eventually, you can convert them to customers. This means increase in sales.

Isn’t that great? This is what your business needs to get more revenue.

Rank First Page on Bing

According to a report on April 2017 by Smart Insights, Google now has 77.43% of the search engine market share.

That’s huge, right?

But let us not forget the other search engines that are taking the rest of the 22.57% search engine market share. The percentage might not seem like a lot. But do not forget that the market share is in the billions.

That same insights reported that there were 6,586,013,574 searches a day worldwide! For that month, Bing had 873,964,000 searches per day. And Yahoo had 536,101,505 searches per day.

To me, seems silly to ignore that huge number of searches. After all, a visitor is a visitor, a lead is a lead. And each can be converted to be a customer.

As such, I don’t ignore the other search engines. And here is a screen shot of my website getting ranked on first page of Bing.

How To Promote A Business Online? – Start With One-Time Tasks – Part Six-B

Add a Lead Capture System to Your Website

Driving traffic to your business website alone is not enough. You mustn’t be a passive participant who waits for people to contact you and purchase your product and/or service.

You need to take control of the communication process by adding a lead capture system to your business website.

A lead capture system enables you to have the opportunity to acquire the names and contact information of those who visit your business website. You know what this means, right? Now, you can capture information of potential customers, build it into a database, and market your products and/or services to them!

Effectively, you have created a database of sales leads. This is something tangible to work from to get more sales. I am sure you can see the value of having a lead capture system by now.

Lead Capture Systems Defined

A lead capture system comprises an opt-in online form on a web page where visitors can enter a name and an email address in exchange for more information; for example a free report, free audio, free online video or free eBook. Sometimes it is simply to subscribe for e-newsletter to be updated on latest news of a product or service.

Some lead capture systems may ask for more details such as a mailing address and/or a phone number. When setting up a lead capture system, try to refrain from asking the visitor to provide too much information. It will turn people off, and reduce the likelihood of them completing the sign-up form, or worse they won’t submit it.

Those who visit your business website, and opted in to be on your email list have actually indicated to you that they are interested in your products and/or services. You can be confident that these leads will mostly likely be your future customers.

After setting up the lead capture system on your business website, you need to nurture the leads that eventually end up in your database. You must keep regular contact with these people, and you can do this by sending them newsletters regularly, keep them updated on new sales and offerings, make them feel special by offering unique deals only for those who are in your email list (a good way to generate business when sales is slow).

The entire lead capture system requires not just an opt-in form. As part of an entire process, you need to do some of the items mentioned in the 6 Things You Should Be Doing chapter. For one, you need to have autoresponders in place. This is so that when people sign up, the autoresponder will automatically send them a greeting, a welcome email to acknowledge their inclusion in your email list.

In that same welcome email, take the opportunity to introduce a little more about your products and/or services. Over time, with regular e-newsletters, you can feed more information about your products and/or services so as to encourage them to make a purchase.

As you build your email list, and market your products and/or services to them regularly, with useful information, you will enjoy the power of a larger customer base, and be able to generate cash on demand.

Building an Email List

Most large businesses recognize the value of email lists. And lately, more and more small and medium businesses are beginning to realize the benefits of having an email list, too. Here are the advantages to having an email list:

Multiple Selling Opportunities

Without a lead capture system, visitors to your business website may just leave without buying anything, and they may be gone for good, too. At least, with a lead capture system, you will still be able to maintain contact with them. This way, you have lots of opportunities to sell your products and services to that visitor in the future.

Selling to Existing Customers

Your existing customers should be on your email list. If they are not, you should make sure they are. Then have some form of indication in your database to show that they are your existing customers. Every now and then, create special offers and promotions to your loyal customers, to induce further sales.

Referral Opportunities

With an email list, you can write to them and ask for referrals. Chances are you will most probably get it.

Deals and Offers

People love specials, deals, offers and sales. So when the time is right, send these out to your email list. It is known that during festive season, people are more in a buying mood. And sales usually go up during these times. So take note of all festive seasons, where you are at, and send out that holiday special in a timely fashion.

Branding and Image

Communicate regularly to your email list, especially with useful information that positions you as an expert in the field. Again, building a brand and image creates trust. And with trust, people are more willing to buy from you.

As you can see, effective use of your email list can help your business to thrive, and you will be able to see growth in your sales.

Strong branding can establish you as a trusted expert in that field, in your local market. Figure out the kind of feel you would like your website, and all other online property where you have a presence, to have. They should reflect who you are, and what your brand is.

Unless the field in which your business is in requires it, try to stay away from the ‘stuffy’ corporate type of website or any online presence that you have. Some tweaks to your business website can give that impression, and help increase sales for you.

Here are some of the things that you can include on your business website to help you create that special personal touch:

- Photographs of the owner (you) and your staff, plus information about them.
- Expert articles that you have written.
- Professional Associations.
- Business Groups that you are a member of.
- References from other businesses.
- Audio or video message from the owner (again, that’s you)
- Audio or video testimonial from clients.

As mentioned earlier, you and your business need to be perceived as friendly, not stuffy. Take some time to invest in personal branding. You will discover that it is worth it as it will attract more and more buying customers. Also, you can gain the trust you needed to be successful in the online marketplace.

How To Promote A Business Online? – Start With One-Time Tasks – Part Six-A

Now that you have created your Simple Digital Marketing Plan, the entire project may seem rather daunting. Do not feel overwhelmed. There is a way to approach this that will make you feel at ease.

Take a good look at the list of digital marketing tasks. Many of the items on that list are important and can make a difference to your digital marketing strategy. Some are ongoing tasks, and some are just one-time tasks.

Start with these one-time tasks:

1. Identify and find your ideal customers.

2. Do detailed keyword research.

3. Do onsite Search Engine Optimization updates.

4. Add a lead capture system to your business website.

5. Complete personal branding changes.

These tasks are the foundation of your digital marketing plan. They are essential for increasing your online presence. Without them, many of your other digital marketing strategies may fail.

Similarly, they must work together with your other digital marketing strategies. If you only do these tasks, there is no guarantee your business website will rise to the top of search results, or even on the first page of it.

So it is very important for you to take note that you cannot simply do only these one-time tasks, and then stop. You need to do the other tasks, too. To help you and to make sure you do that, set yourself a deadline for the completion of these tasks. Then once all have been completed, move on to the other digital marketing tasks.

Identify And Find Your Ideal Customers

In the previous chapter, Your Simple Digital Marketing Plan, we discussed about this. All you have to do is to sit down, and think of who your target audience is. Consider the following:

- Who uses your product or service?
- What need do they fulfill when they purchase your product or service?
- What is the motivation to buy? For example, are you adding pleasure or removing pain?
- Who is the decision maker that says the final yes or no to the purchase of your product or service?
- What is their gender?
- What is their income?
- What is their occupation?
- Where are they located?
- When do they buy your product or service?
- What other interests do they have?
- Do they have any concerns about products and services like yours?
- Why should they buy from you rather than your competitor?
- How do they like to be communicate with?

These are just some examples of questions that can help you identify and find your ideal customers. Feel free to add more questions that can help you achieve that.

Doing Detailed Keyword Research

Carrying out detailed keyword research goes hand in hand with identifying and finding your ideal customers. After discovering who your ideal customers are, you need to find them, lead them to your business website, and successfully convert them into actual paying clients.

Detailed keyword research is typically a one-time task that should be done at the beginning of your digital marketing campaign. I say ‘typically’ because there are sites that require ongoing keyword research. For example, an ECommerce site that is always adding new products will require keyword research for every new product.

But for most, this can be a one-time task. My advice is to delegate this to a keyword research specialist for they are very good at this job, and can yield extremely effective results.

The Necessity of Keyword Research

In the past, you may have been stumbling around in the dark, wondering what your potential clients are searching for and what words and phrases they use in search when they look for similar products and/or services like what you have to offer. Keyword research is like turning on the light.

When you do keyword research, you will no longer guess, but you will know exactly what words and phrases people use when they look for products and/or services like your products and/or services.

Fortunately, this is a task that needs to be done once. It is repeated only when you have a new line of products or services to offer, or when you open a new division of your company. You get the gist, basically when your products and/or services are affected by changes.

To find out what are the keywords that people use to find products, services or businesses in your field, you need to ask yourself the following questions:

How Will People Search For You?

Ask yourself these questions:

- What types of phrasing do you think your potential customers will use when searching for you?
- Will they look for an occupation, a type of business, an industry, a type of solution, or perhaps even a product or service type?
- Will they use geographic modifiers such as a city, a country, or even a region? What about motivation?

Some people are motivated by certain factors to search for a particular product or service, and it can come through in their search by using specific words such as ’24 hour’.

Here are some examples for your three considerations:

Specific person:

“Plumber”, “plumbing contractor”, etc.

Geographic modifiers:

“plumber Singapore”, “plumber Kowloon”, “plumber Budapest”, etc.

Motivation levels:

“emergency plumber Taipei”, “24 hour plumber”, etc.

A keyword research tool can be very useful, and you should employ it as a critical part of your keyword research. There are many such tools available in the market.

There is a free tool that is of great help as it can also generate keyword ideas for you as well as synonyms is Google’s Keyword Tool. It also cross references your keywords with geographic modifiers. This becomes very useful and effective in getting your business website ranked for strong keywords.

Alternatively, consider hiring a digital marketing firm to do it all for you. Besides building a list of long-tail keywords, your digital marketing expert can help you find out which specific keywords are most valuable. Plus, they can also gather intelligence on keywords that your competitors are using.

Document Data for Future Use

It is always good to keep records of everything you do. Archiving allows you access to past efforts or even use data for current or future projects. This is why it is wise to keep a tab on all the keywords that you discover. Also, it will reduce the need to repeat any keyword search.

The keywords will become very valuable to you. They can be used in every aspect of your digital marketing. This research that is done one-time and in the beginning, about your ideal client and what he or she searches, will be used in all your online content. You can use the keywords for the following:

- Search Engine Optimization
- Social Media
- Ads

Use a couple or more keywords from your keyword list every month. Just by simply adding one or more traffic methods to your existing traffic generating strategies can produce significant results.

- Is it attractive to your target audience? Etc.

Over the years, when we did audits of many a website, we did discover many critical components missing. It is quite disappointing to find some web creators not providing their best for their clients, or perhaps they too are not aware of these critical components. Nevertheless, do know that these components are essential for the success of your business website.

They will make your business website appealing not only to visitors but also search engines. Go through this list and make sure all are in place. If not, include them immediately for the best results.

Easy Navigation

A website that is easy to use will encourage your visitor to stay a little longer and explore the site. Keep the navigation straightforward; for example, clear menu options that are always displayed at the same location on every web page.

Vital Information ‘Above The Fold’

Not everyone will bother to scroll down, go to a next page, or click on a link to another page unless you made it so enticing for them to from the home page. So it is best to place all the important information on the home page for the visitor.

It is frustrating to visitors and search engines when a link is broken. Make sure all links are working well at all times.

Home Page, Products Page, Services Page, Testimonials, About Page and Contact Form

Do ensure that, at the very least, all these pages exist on your business website, and filled with useful and timely content.

Once you captured your visitor’s attention, lead them to where you want them to go on your site. Do this in order to eventually have them make a purchase.

Specific Instructions

Be specific with any instructions on any page on your business website.

Multiple Calls To Action

Encourage your visitors to take action throughout your site. Of course, do it elegantly. Don’t be loud, or scream at your audience, or be tacky. Use motivating words like ‘Call now’, ‘Buy now’, etc.

Pictures Used Correctly

Pictures should match the content. Better if it provides explanation of the content. After all, a picture tells a thousand words. Using pictures correctly includes proper sizing of pictures as well as captions for it.

Non-Distracting Design

The design should not distract the visitor from the content, unless the design is the content. For example, do not use animated background that is too distracting. Also, keep the fonts simple and standard. Do not use funny looking fonts, try to avoid italics, and preferably do not underline any text.

Dark Text On A Light Background

Studies have found that people find it easy to read when the text is dark and the background is of a light color. Keep that in mind, and make it standard on your business website.

Multiple Ways To Contact

A contact number and/or email address should be available on every page, discreetly and elegantly positioned at the same area. This makes it easy for the visitor should he or she decides to contact you.

Trust Factors

Your business website is the best place to showcase your trust certificates and awards. If possible, find a way to highlight this on your home page. If not, have at least a link to web page that features these.

Testimonials

Nowadays, testimonials are displayed on the home page, especially websites with responsive web design. Some even make the testimonials displayed using a slideshow. Testimonials are a great way to build trust for your brand. When visitors see what others have to say about your brand, they feel confident to do business with you.

Personal Branding

As discussed in Your Simple Digital Marketing Plan chapter, a strong brand is a valuable asset. Besides a logo and a slogan, there are many other elements that make up your brand.

For example, in your About Us section of your website, pictures of you, the management, and your staff communicates who you are, as a brand, to your audience. Other forms of communicating your brand include branding vehicles, online videos, audios, social media, and many more.

Optimization for Keywords

I have said it before, and I will say it again for I believe repetition to be a good learning style. You must take the time and effort to do keyword research. This is so that your keywords are optimized properly.

Using good keywords is a huge plus for search engines. For example, one way of using your keywords is to have them in your business website with title tags, meta tags, the URL, the headers and description of a web page.

Search engines love it when websites contain content that has relevance to the main subject of the website. You can create relevancy by starting broad, and then drilling down within themes. Tip: Always optimize for one keyword per page. Don’t do it for multiple keywords per page.

Lastly, Avoid Flash and Frames

These do not add any value to your business website, especially when optimizing for search engines.

By now, with the implementation of the above critical components, your business website should naturally move closer to the top of search engine results.

You need to also implement the other tasks in your digital marketing plan; for example, maintaining a blog, regular updates on social networks, implementing other Web 2.0 applications, submitting articles with links back to your site in order to increase traffic, building quality one-way links, etc.
