In a nutshell, I have been doing digital marketing for over 30 years. Today, I am a lecturer who teaches Digital Marketing at a university and education institutes.

What is Digital Marketing?

Chances are you already know or kind of know what digital marketing is all about. Especially since you can experience it almost everywhere on the Internet.

But there may be still some people who may not know or maybe they only have a rough idea what it is all about. So, for the latter, here is a brief explanation about what is digital marketing.

It is when businesses and brands are using internet and online technologies to promote products and services. The technologies are digital, and can be computers, mobile phones, and other forms of digital media.

Before the Internet, businesses did what is termed today as traditional marketing. Of course, back then we just call it marketing. And it is marketing using media such as newspapers, magazines, poster ads, etc.

When I first started in my first marketing role, I did traditional marketing. I was doing print magazines, and print ads.

Then came the Internet. And it changed the way brands and businesses did marketing using technology.

I was there too when the Internet first came to Singapore. I joined a web and multimedia company that developed websites and multimedia shows and presentation.

That was back in the 1990s. And back then, website marketing was a popular way to reach to the audiences.

Then, over the years, came SEO (Search Engine Optimization), SEM (Search Engine Marketing), Social Media Marketing, Email Marketing, and more. As each of the digital strategies was introduced, I learned them all, and applied them for my clients. Today, most businesses are using digital marketing to promote their products and services.

In this time of pandemic, businesses and brands have found that it has become even more important to do digital marketing. Businesses and brands that do not turn to digital marketing have found it a struggle to continue within their markets or grow their businesses.

Where to learn Digital Marketing?

One of the ways to learn digital marketing is to attend degree courses at a university. For example, the one where I teach. Or the executive short courses at education institutes. I teach those too, at a few institutes.

9 Digital Marketing Strategies

Today, I will discuss each of these strategies in brief. I will also be doing more blog posts in the future, sharing each of these strategies in more depth and details.

Digital Marketing Strategy 1 – Website Marketing

These days, most businesses need a website. It is where people can find out all about a company and what they are offering to the market.

Websites are very useful because all the information about your business, your company, and what you offer are all there, 24/7. At any time, a consumer can visit your website, get all the relevant information. And if your website has eCommerce, the visitors can even purchase your product or service online.

Digital Marketing Strategy 2 – Search Advertising

In a previous blog post, I discussed about Winning the Micro Moments. I mentioned about being there when people have a micro moment.

A micro moment is driven by a trigger such as need for a product, service or information.

When people experience a micro moment, they reflexively reach for their mobile phones and search for what they want. It is very important that marketers make sure that their brand, product or service appears on this search engine results page (SERPs).

One of the ways is to do Search Ads such as Google Ads. And when you do Google Ads, make sure that it appears on the first page of the search results.

This is because being on the first page of search results raises the chances of your ad getting clicked on by searchers. As such, it increases the chances of driving traffic to the business’ website, and increasing sales.

Digital Marketing Strategy 3 – SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

This next strategy is called SEO, and it means Search Engine Optimization. What this means is to get your website or web pages rank on search engines by optimizing your website. This is called organic ranking

One of the SEO tactics is to do On Page SEO. It is an optimization tactic where you do things on your website. These are such as title tag, meta description, image alt tag, and many more.

You will also need to do Off Page SEO. These are efforts that are done outside of your website; such as backlinks, social media mentions, guest posting, article submission, and many more.

Together, the On Page and Off Page efforts will help your web pages rank high on search results.

And as mentioned, the idea is to appear on the first page of search results. This will raise the chances of getting the the web pages get clicked on by searchers. As a result, this increases the chances of driving traffic to the business website and increasing sales.

Digital Marketing Strategy 4 – Social Media Marketing

The primary goal of a social media marketing campaign or effort is usually brand awareness, and establishing social trust. There are popular social media networks such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and more.

Today, social media has proven to be a powerful channel for marketing. This is because more and more people are getting on social media daily. Businesses have realized that to reach to their target audience, they need to get on social media, and do social media marketing.

Businesses need to have social media accounts, and post updates about their brands, products and services. These social media networks are platforms for them to connect and engage with their target market.

Most social media networks also have advertising options. So, this is also a form of PPC Advertising, which stands for Pay Per Click Advertising.

For example, Facebook Advertising can be used by businesses to promote their brand, product or service on that social media platform. So, it is critical to learn and use social media marketing. And also make use of the various advertising methods to reach out to your target audience.

Digital Marketing Strategy 5 – Email Marketing

Email marketing has been done for a very, very long time. And, this is still relevant today. It is still one of the most effective digital marketing channels.

It is known to be one of the most powerful and effective ways of promoting your brand, product or service to your target market. Today, because of the mobile phones and the Internet, people can check their emails from anywhere at anytime. As such, email marketing has risen in prominence again.

Businesses need to use email marketing to connect with subscribers. It is a medium to get in touch with your potential customers or the people interested in your brand.

To do that, you use all other digital marketing channels to add leads to your email lists. And then, through email marketing, you create customer acquisition funnels to turn those leads into customers.

Digital Marketing Strategy 6 – Content Marketing

Content is King. I am sure you heard of this phrase. If you have not, then now you have.

The reason why they say that is because content is a powerful and effective way to drive traffic to your website. First of all, your content must be of good quality and relevant to what the visitor needs to find out about a certain brand, product or service. Content can be blog posts, YouTube videos, infographics, podcasts, emails, social media posts, etc.

Content is very important especially when using it to capture micro moment of a customer journey. It can help your business to be there, to provide information or the right product or service at that micro moment when a consumer needs it.

Digital Marketing Strategy 7 – Video Marketing

I have said it for years, and I will continue to say this – Video is the Future.

Videos are known to be easy to consume. The visuals and music plus superb storytelling can tug at our heartstrings. Videos are also able to bring across a message very quickly and efficiently within a short time.

Today, videos are outperforming other forms of content. They have higher engagement rates. So, it is vital to do video marketing.

I believe this is because people today prefer to watch a video than read about a brand, product or service. Of course, after watching the video, they may like to find out more. They will then go to your web page to read more about your product or service.

And this is when your other content like a blog post or information on your website becomes important in the customer buying decision journey. So, make sure you not only have videos. you must have all the information available for the consumer when they need to finid out more.

So, today you can also do video marketing and advertising on video platforms like YouTube, Vimeo, TikTok. And even share videos on social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, etc.

But, of all these platforms, YouTube has become really popular. In fact, it has become the second most popular search engine. And a lot of users are turning to YouTube before they make a buying decision.

They go to YouTube to learn about a product or service, or maybe read a review. They do this before they make the purchase decision.

Companies actually do find the most success with video by integrating it with SEO, content marketing, and broader social media marketing campaigns.

Digital Marketing Strategy 8 – Paid Advertising eg PPC (Pay Per Click) Advertising

When you are on your browser or mobile phone, when you are reading your newsfeed on social media, do you see Sponsored Posts? Or even the search ads that I mentioned earlier?

These are forms of paid advertising. Some paid advertisements will have fixed advertising fees for businesses to advertise on a website.

Many are what is known as PPC (Pay Per Click) Advertising. When you click on any of these PPC ads, the advertiser is charged an advertising fee.

Brands and businesses use these ads to reach their audience. With online advertising, they can target their audience using demographics or interests of that particular demographics.

These ads can help increase brand awareness, drive traffic to a website, and even generate sales. As with all the above strategies, this is just a brief introduction.

Affiliate Marketing is another digital marketing strategy that companies use. It is actually one of the oldest forms of marketing given new life with the Internet.

What companies do is they offer affiliate programs to people especially publishers. The publisher will then promote the products or services of these companies. And get a commission every time a sale is completed.

There are many well-known companies doing affiliate marketing. And one of them is actually Amazon. Amazon has an affiliate program that pays out millions of dollars per month to websites that sell their products. So, you know it is quite a huge industry.

Affiliate marketing has also made many people into millionaires. These are affiliate marketers. They are the ones that companies target to help promote their products.
