What is a Double Rainbow?
A double rainbow is a natural phenomenon that occurs when sunlight is refracted by water droplets in the atmosphere.
The first rainbow is the primary rainbow, and it’s the one that we’re most familiar with. The second rainbow is the secondary rainbow, and it’s fainter than the primary rainbow.
The secondary rainbow is formed when sunlight is reflected twice within the water droplets.
The first reflection occurs at the front of the water droplet, and the second reflection occurs at the back of the water droplet.
The meaning of double rainbows in different cultures
Double rainbows have been a source of fascination and wonder for centuries.
In many cultures, they’re seen as a symbol of good luck, hope, and dreams come true.
Here are some of the meanings of double rainbows in different cultures:
- Irish culture: In Irish culture, double rainbows are seen as a sign of good luck. It’s believed that if you see a double rainbow, you’ll find a pot of gold at the end of it.
- Native American culture: In Native American culture, double rainbows are seen as a symbol of hope. They’re believed to be a sign that the Creator is watching over us and that things will get better.

The Scientific Explanation for Double Rainbows
The scientific explanation for double rainbows is a little more complicated.
But essentially, it’s all about the way that light is refracted by water droplets.
When sunlight hits a water droplet, it’s refracted, or bent, twice.
The first refraction occurs when the light enters the water droplet.
The second refraction occurs when the light exits the water droplet.
The first refraction bends the light towards the observer.
The second refraction bends the light away from the observer.
This is why the secondary rainbow is fainter than the primary rainbow.

My Personal Experiences with Double Rainbows
I’ve seen a few double rainbows in my lifetime, and each time has been a special experience.
I cannot remember when were the times I saw these double rainbows.
But I remember I was awed when I saw them in the sky.
Besides awe, there was a feeling of something special.
Recently, I saw the double rainbows again.
It was outside my home, across a few blocks of housing flats.
They were huge and spanned across the sky.
I had gone through a challenging time in my life, having healed from cancer.
The biggest challenge was my having to deal with cancer and being healed from it.
After being healed, I faced the challenge of putting my life together again.
It was not an easy thing to do.
Also, I started to write a book about my healing from cancer jouney.
That was also a monumental task.
But when I saw the double rainbow, it gave me a sense of hope.
It reminded me that even though things were tough, there was still beauty and goodness in the world.
Also, I believe that it is a sign of good luck, hope, peace and dreams come true.
So, I look forward to good things to come into my life.
