Social Media and Social Networking

“Investment in Social Media Will Become a Necessity, Not a Luxury” – Forbes, 2013

The above was reported by Forbes in 2013, and since then this has proven true. The report said that social media will evolve from ‘should have’ to ‘must have’.

How To Promote Your Business Online - Tasks That Repeat - Social Media MarketingAlready, businesses are realizing that they need to integrate their social media efforts with their overall marketing strategy. Many businesses are seeing the impact of social media in terms of lead generation, referral traffic and increase in revenue.

The benefits of social media are many, and they include the following:

  • Create strong branding
  • Increase brand exposure and brand awareness
  • Improves social signals (which is a factor in search ranking algorithm)
  • Enhances buzz marketing; also known as word-of-mouth advertising
  • Increase customer loyalty and trust
  • Improve audience reach and influence

Of all the social media networks currently available, you should definitely be on Facebook, Google+, Instagram and Twitter at the very least. These social networks are very important digital marketing tools that can help businesses create a strong online presence.

However, to achieve that you need to post updates on each social network regularly. Some believe posts must be done daily. That is all right as it doesn’t hurt the brand, unless you are posting irrelevant topics.

For me, I believe in quality postings. And I find that, while it is all right to post daily initially, in time it is more efficient to post during times when most of your fans or followers are online. After all, it is best to fish in the area where and when there are most fishes, right?

After some time, after studying data analytics and insights, you may discover How To Promote Your Business Online - Tasks That Repeat - Analytics can help improve your digital marketing strategythat these optimum times could be just 3 to 4 times a week, these would be specific days and timings when a majority of your fans and followers are online, and watching your Facebook Page, Google+, Instagram or Twitter accounts.

Even then, it takes a lot of time and effort just to do research and find interesting and relevant topics to post. After all, you don’t just always post about your products and services. While people who are your fans and followers are interested in your products and services, they are also interested in news and information related to the field and industry your products and services are within.

And to gather a constant flow of such news and services, besides just information about your products and services, can be daunting. Don’t forget you need to do copywriting.

Don’t just share an online article without adding your own thoughts to it. Social media is about engaging people. You need to write copy that is interesting and engages your fans and followers. Especially when you want them to take action and lead them to your website or make a purchase.

How To Promote Your Business Online - Tasks That Repeat - Photos and videos brighten up a blog post, makes it more interesting, easier to consumeAlso, not all photos look great. So you will need to know a bit of digital imaging to make photos look good enough to capture your audience’s attention.

Remember, your posts will be on your fans and followers’ newsfeed. You need to catch their attention amongst all other postings on their newsfeed. And surveys have found that posts with photos or videos definitely capture people’s attention.

I know all this can be intimidating. Especially for those who are short on time and resources, or who isn’t a fan of social networking. But if you want your digital marketing strategy to be successful, you need to be on social media, and be regularly active on the aforementioned networks. An alternative is to outsource to a digital marketing expert or firm, which is a good idea as you can leverage on their expertise.

When building your social networks, be sure to also engage with your fans and followers. They will interact with you, and leave comments. Be sure to reply to their comments. Even if there are negative comments, do reply.

Take this opportunity to clarify points, convert people to customers, and build good PR and brand that will give a good impression to the public as well as your existing customers. You have an opportunity to build and develop a relationship that is becoming increasingly important to people when deciding who they choose to do business with.

There is another aspect of social media that many businesses often overlook. You can befriend other businesses that are complementary to yours. One of the advantages is that when you like or comment on a post on their social accounts, their fans and followers get to see it. This way, you have just increased brand exposure and awareness to another group of potential new customers.

Besides Facebook, Google+, Instagram and Twitter, here are a few more social media sites that you might like to consider:

  • Pinterest
  • YouTube
  • LinkedIn
  • Social Bookmarking Sites

Blogging

Many business websites have jumped on the blogging bandwagon. This is because they have realized that it is one of the most effective ways to get to the top of search engine results for chosen keywords.

Google and other search engines love such applications. They visit blogs often How to Promote Your Business Online? - Blogging is an essential part of promoting your business online. It is one of the Tasks That Repeatsto re-index the content found there.

Do consider having a blog on your business website. Blog regularly, and your site will get increasingly better results in search engines.

Blogging is one of the repeated tasks that does take up a lot of time, effort and resources. Yet, it is easier and faster to produce compared to articles and press releases. Blogs can be shorter than an article, and has fewer guidelines than a press release.

Do take note that you should apply SEO techniques for maximum effectiveness.

For example, you should focus on keywords, especially long-tail keywords. At the same time, be careful not to stuff keywords into the text. There should be a natural flow to the style of writing.

Also, write in a way that people will enjoy reading your blog, and will want to keep coming back to it. The best is when they like it so much that they subscribe to your RSS feed.

Here are some tips for blogging:

* Most Important Tip: Use keywords in the title, and in one or two paragraphs within the blog.

Keep your blog posts within 800 – 2,000 words

Of course, do not be too restricted by this tip. Write naturally, and let the length be how much it should be. This tip is just a guide.

Add Graphics, Photos and Videos when possible.

These days, people don’t like to read anything with too much text. They only do so when they are really interested, and wish to get more details.

Also, studies have discovered that people prefer blogs, articles and postings with photos, graphic images or videos. It attracts them to the blog, article or posting.

It is a break from the amount of text. It is interesting. A picture tells a thousand words. Plus, it encourages them to dive deeper and continue reading.

Schedule Posts Regularly.

Scheduling a post is very subjective. It all depends on the industry you are in. At the same time, it is ideal for your blog to have a new post on a regular basis.

Start with releasing a new post every 3 days. Monitor the response. Then try to post more often, and see if this schedule attracts more people.

Relevance

Your blog should be relevant to the latest news, happenings and events in the world. Especially if you are in an industry that follows trends, do keep up with it, and keep your blog trendy.

* Tip: Here is a Do Not. Don’t use your blog to rant about something. It is not your anger management tool or punching bag. Keep it professional. Keep it informative.

There are ways to draw and increase traffic to your business website using blogs. You can create more back links when you submit your offsite blog posts to social networking and social news sharing sites.

The Importance of Blog Comments

Your blog offers an opportunity to interact with your customers, and people interested in your product and/or service. Those who make comments are likely to be existing customers or potential customers.

How To Promote Your Business Online - Tasks That Repeat - Engage your customers when they give feedback via comments. Be professional - positive, polite, pleasant.Remember this is your business blog. Keep your responses professional, polite and friendly.

You must always answer all valid questions, reply to comments, and even respond to complaints. The way you handle negative comments and complaints speaks volumes to all watching and following your blog.

First thing to note – do not delete negative comments or complaints. They are also feedback from your customers, and you can learn a lot from these negative comments and complaints, which is very valuable. Your next big product or service could be waiting to be discovered in the feedback.

When people share with you the little things that bother them most about your product and/or service, or what they would like as an ideal addition to it, you are receiving free advice on how to create a new and improved version of your product and/or service, or invent a totally new one. This interaction allows you to garner valuable knowledge that can help your business grow.

Get active on other blogs, too. Comment on blogs that are related to your field, and leave your business website address to create more valuable back links.

But be careful.

There is a thin line here. Do not callously just make a comment in order to advertise for your business. It is frowned upon, and may even be deleted eventually. Write relevant and helpful comments. Leave your business website URL only in spaces provided.

Video Marketing

We live in a culture that grew up watching television shows. It has become a natural thing to do. We watch TV when we awake, we watch it when we come home from school or work, and we watch it on weekends.

It is no surprise that as the Internet bandwidth get wider, and video gets higher in resolution, watching videos on the Internet is gaining popularity. More and more people prefer to watch a video to get information rather than reading for it.

How to Promote Your Business Online? - Video Marketing is the Future

Hence, Video Marketing is the next wave in digital marketing.

It is an ideal method to get a message across to a large audience. More importantly, it is very cost effective, more so than advertising on print or TV. Plus, mass media often has a lot of wastage. Video Marketing can be a form of targeted marketing.

There are a wide variety of options when creating your video. One of which is to educate through the use of slides. It is just like a live presentation. The information is displayed like a slideshow while a narrator explains in further details.

As explained in the Blogging chapter, make good use of graphics and photos to give your video a great visual effect. Sometimes, sound effects and music can add that extra touch to your video, making it entertaining while being informative.

Another option is to use an actual video clip or edit video clips into an entire video. You may also consider combining the use of slides with video clips, too.
Video Marketing is very powerful. It allows you to:

  • Provide Information About Your Products and/or Services.
  • Give Instructions on How to Use Your Products.
  • Deal with Questions.
  • Share Expert Articles.
  • Do Demonstrations.
  • Offer Solutions to Common Problems.
  • Show Amazing ‘Before’ and ‘After’ Results.
  • Conduct Webinars.
  • Share Testimonials.
  • Show Company Overviews.
  • Give a Tour of Your Facilities.
  • Present the Owner of the Company in an Interview.

There are many more uses for video marketing. More importantly, it can meet a variety of marketing needs, such as:

  • Branding.
  • Public Relations.
  • Building Trust.
  • Use it to inform and/or educate people.
  • Use it to grab the attention of visitors, and have them explore your business website further.
  • A lot of people are busy, and always on the go. Hence, they have very little time to read mass amounts of text. They would rather watch a short video.
  • Use it offsite to grab searchers and redirect them to your business website or call your phone.
  • Use it to get rankings for multiple keywords.
  • Use it to spice up external landing pages, and Web 2.0 digital properties.

It is not that complicated to create quality video. But it does require a lot of time, and some knowledge. Do consider a video production company, or have your digital marketing firm add this as part of your digital marketing strategy. This way, you can save time and focus on your business while leveraging on their expertise.

Get Your Website Ranked First Page On Google – Just Like Mine

My website, this website – timotheuslee.com – has reached Page One on Google and other search engines. Wouldn’t you like to Get Your Website Ranked First Page on Google and other search engines too?

This is not the first website that I ranked on 1st Page of search engines. In the past I ranked for other clients’ sites and my digital marketing agency – OOJO – which is still ranking on 1st page for many keywords. For example, I managed to get OOJO on First Page of Google, and till today, they are still on that much sought after position. Speaking of positions, in fact, OOJO now ranks for multiple keywords and many are not only on the first page, they are also ranking at number one.

So what happens after your website achieves 1st Page? How will it benefit your business? What will this coveted space mean for your brand? This will all be discussed further down the article.

But before that, let me show you some of the screen shots of the winning ranking position my website has gained.

Get Your Website Ranked First Page on Google and be a Winner!

Rank on First Page on Google

Here is a screen shot of getting Ranked on First Page on Google. The screen shot was taken on 18 July 2017.

I will be honest with you. It took eight months for my website to reach first page on Google. On Yahoo and Bing, it was a little faster. It took only three months.

It would have been faster on Google, but I was busy with training, delivering talks at seminars and conferences as well as doing digital marketing projects for clients. Despite a very heavy work schedule, I did manage to spend as much free time as I can doing SEO for my website. So, achieving first page in eight months is quite good, don’t you agree?

A lot of effort was put into getting this website to the 1st page. There was, of course, On Page SEO, which includes title tags, headers and more.

And of course, let us not forget Off Page SEO that included Social Media Marketing to create Social Signals, back links from directory listings and other sites, and many other Off Page tactics.

Not to forget the important strategy to keep creating content. Google and other search engines love fresh content. And this post is just another fresh content for them to relish.

In case you prefer not to click on the above image to see a larger version of the screen shot, here is a close up of the top of it. I grabbed this portion of the screen shot to show that the search engine is Google, and also to show the keyword phrase I have competed and ranked for.

Totally Worth The Journey

I started doing SEO (Search Engine Optimization) on this website in November 2016. As with any website that I am working on, I started with Keyword Research. And chose the best keyword phrase that has good amount of traffic and medium competition. This is the same that I will do for all my clients.

After selection of the keyword phrase, next was On Page SEO. Careful placement of the keywords at the right places, in the right amounts was required. We do not want to be doing Keyword Stuffing, right?

* Tip: Do not do Keyword Stuffing; i.e. excessively placing your keywords all over any page on your website or the entire website. Google will penalize!

Next was Off Page SEO that took a longer time. As mentioned above, one of the tactics was to get back links. One way was to find relevant directories and get listed on them.

* Tip: Directories must be RELEVANT. For example, my website is about Digital Marketing. I get this website listed on either marketing or digital marketing sub categories of directories.

Back links, in itself, is quite extensive. It is not just about getting listed on directories. There are many ways to get back links. For example, guest blogging on other sites and getting a back link from that, participating in forums and crediting your participation with a back link, and many more.

* Tip: Always remember that wherever you place your back link, it must be Relevant to your website’s main topic.

Then there is Social Media where you can generate Social Signals that will indicate to the search bots that your website or brand is relevant and popular. Plus many more other Off Page SEO strategies.

There are a lot more Off Page strategies, and it would take a whole article or many articles to write about them all. I have written some on my blog. And will write and share more. So do remember to subscribe to my newsletter to get updates.

Rewards of Ranking on First Page

Throughout this website, especially on topics about SEO and Online Visibility, I would reiterate the many Rewards of Ranking on First Page. For one, there will definitely be an increase in traffic. A live example here is my website reaching the first page, and the traffic has grown significantly, and is still growing.

When there is higher traffic to your website, it means more people are finding your website and visiting it. This is an opportunity to get them to leave behind a contact, usually an email address.

As you collect more email addresses, you are growing your list of subscribers. This list is very valuable. Take time to nurture your followers. And eventually, you can convert them to customers. This means increase in sales.

Isn’t that great? This is what your business needs to get more revenue.

Rank First Page on Bing

According to a report on April 2017 by Smart Insights, Google now has 77.43% of the search engine market share.

That’s huge, right?

But let us not forget the other search engines that are taking the rest of the 22.57% search engine market share. The percentage might not seem like a lot. But do not forget that the market share is in the billions.

That same insights reported that there were 6,586,013,574 searches a day worldwide! For that month, Bing had 873,964,000 searches per day. And Yahoo had 536,101,505 searches per day.

To me, seems silly to ignore that huge number of searches. After all, a visitor is a visitor, a lead is a lead. And each can be converted to be a customer.

As such, I don’t ignore the other search engines. And here is a screen shot of my website getting ranked on first page of Bing.

First Page on Yahoo

As mentioned above, Yahoo too has a substantial amount of searches. So do get your website ranked on first page there too. Here is a screen shot of my website ranked on first page of Yahoo.

We have come to the end of this sort of ‘press release’. To all my friends, fans and followers who congratulated me when timotheuslee.com reached first page of Google – My heartfelt thanks!

If you ever need a hand or have any questions, feel free to leave them below and I will be more than happy to help you out. Or if you simply wish to connect and leave a comment, it will be most welcome. I would love to hear from you.

How To Promote A Business Online? – Start With One-Time Tasks – Part Six-A

How To Promote A Business Online - Start With One Time Tasks

How To Promote A Business Online? – Start With One-Time Tasks – Part Six-A

Now that you have created your Simple Digital Marketing Plan, the entire project may seem rather daunting. Do not feel overwhelmed. There is a way to approach this that will make you feel at ease.

Take a good look at the list of digital marketing tasks. Many of the items on that list are important and can make a difference to your digital marketing strategy. Some are ongoing tasks, and some are just one-time tasks.

Start with these one-time tasks:

1.   Identify and find your ideal customers.

2.   Do detailed keyword research.

3.   Do onsite Search Engine Optimization updates.

4.   Add a lead capture system to your business website.

5.   Complete personal branding changes.

These tasks are the foundation of your digital marketing plan. They are essential for increasing your online presence. Without them, many of your other digital marketing strategies may fail.

Similarly, they must work together with your other digital marketing strategies. If you only do these tasks, there is no guarantee your business website will rise to the top of search results, or even on the first page of it.

So it is very important for you to take note that you cannot simply do only these one-time tasks, and then stop. You need to do the other tasks, too. To help you and to make sure you do that, set yourself a deadline for the completion of these tasks. Then once all have been completed, move on to the other digital marketing tasks.

How To Promote A Business Online - Start With Finding Your Target Audience

Identify And Find Your Ideal Customers

In the previous chapter, Your Simple Digital Marketing Plan, we discussed about this. All you have to do is to sit down, and think of who your target audience is. Consider the following:

    • Who uses your product or service?
    • What need do they fulfill when they purchase your product or service?
    • What is the motivation to buy? For example, are you adding pleasure or removing pain?
    • Who is the decision maker that says the final yes or no to the purchase of your product or service?
    • What is their gender?
    • What is their income?
    • What is their occupation?
    • Where are they located?
    • When do they buy your product or service?
    • What other interests do they have?
    • Do they have any concerns about products and services like yours?
    • Why should they buy from you rather than your competitor?
    • How do they like to be communicate with?

These are just some examples of questions that can help you identify and find your ideal customers. Feel free to add more questions that can help you achieve that.

How To Promote A Business Online - Start With Doing Detailed Keyword Research

Doing Detailed Keyword Research

Carrying out detailed keyword research goes hand in hand with identifying and finding your ideal customers. After discovering who your ideal customers are, you need to find them, lead them to your business website, and successfully convert them into actual paying clients.

Remember, they are prospects until they buy your product and/or service. Then they become your actual customer.

Detailed keyword research is typically a one-time task that should be done at the beginning of your digital marketing campaign. I say ‘typically’ because there are sites that require ongoing keyword research. For example, an ECommerce site that is always adding new products will require keyword research for every new product.

But for most, this can be a one-time task. My advice is to delegate this to a keyword research specialist for they are very good at this job, and can yield extremely effective results.

The Necessity of Keyword Research

In the past, you may have been stumbling around in the dark, wondering what your potential clients are searching for and what words and phrases they use in search when they look for similar products and/or services like what you have to offer. Keyword research is like turning on the light.

When you do keyword research, you will no longer guess, but you will know exactly what words and phrases people use when they look for products and/or services like your products and/or services.

Fortunately, this is a task that needs to be done once. It is repeated only when you have a new line of products or services to offer, or when you open a new division of your company. You get the gist, basically when your products and/or services are affected by changes.

To find out what are the keywords that people use to find products, services or businesses in your field, you need to ask yourself the following questions:

How Will People Search For You?

Ask yourself these questions:

    • What types of phrasing do you think your potential customers will use when searching for you?
    • Will they look for an occupation, a type of business, an industry, a type of solution, or perhaps even a product or service type?
    • Will they use geographic modifiers such as a city, a country, or even a region? What about motivation?

Some people are motivated by certain factors to search for a particular product or service, and it can come through in their search by using specific words such as ’24 hour’.

Here are some examples for your three considerations:

Specific person:

“Plumber”, “plumbing contractor”, etc.

Geographic modifiers:

“plumber Singapore”, “plumber Kowloon”, “plumber Budapest”, etc.

Motivation levels:

“emergency plumber Taipei”, “24 hour plumber”, etc.

A keyword research tool can be very useful, and you should employ it as a critical part of your keyword research. There are many such tools available in the market.

There is a free tool that is of great help as it can also generate keyword ideas for you as well as synonyms is Google’s Keyword Tool. It also cross references your keywords with geographic modifiers. This becomes very useful and effective in getting your business website ranked for strong keywords.

Alternatively, consider hiring a digital marketing firm to do it all for you. Besides building a list of long-tail keywords, your digital marketing expert can help you find out which specific keywords are most valuable. Plus, they can also gather intelligence on keywords that your competitors are using.

Document Data for Future Use

It is always good to keep records of everything you do. Archiving allows you access to past efforts or even use data for current or future projects. This is why it is wise to keep a tab on all the keywords that you discover. Also, it will reduce the need to repeat any keyword search.

The keywords will become very valuable to you. They can be used in every aspect of your digital marketing. This research that is done one-time and in the beginning, about your ideal client and what he or she searches, will be used in all your online content. You can use the keywords for the following:

    • Search Engine Optimization
    • Social Media
    • Ads
    • Videos
    • Audios
    • Articles
    • Blogs
    • Press Releases
    • Tags

Use a couple or more keywords from your keyword list every month. Just by simply adding one or more traffic methods to your existing traffic generating strategies can produce significant results.

How To Promote A Business Online - Start With Doing On Page SEO

Do Onsite Search Engine Optimization Updates

This is a one-time activity that will that will transform your business website significantly. Your site will be changed from its current state to a search engine-optimized version that will be very attractive to web crawlers.

It is a very important step that gets your business website ranked as high as possible in search engine results. Many website owners are not aware that while some features on a website may look aesthetically pleasing, they may not be appealing to a search engine. In fact, some of these fancy programming can be detrimental as they can produce negative results from search engines.

Analyze What You Have

First of all, you must analyze your current business website. Check the following items:

    • The look and feel of your business website; for example does it reflect the type of industry your business is in?
    • Is it attractive to your target audience? Etc.
    • Is your business website optimized for visitors?
    • Is your business website optimized for search engines?
    • Does your site work for multiple browsers?

These days, more and more people surf the Internet on their mobile phones. The small screen on a mobile phone does present some problems with viewing the content of a website. To meet this need, many websites are now done with responsive web design.

This is a form of design that provides optimal viewing experience for the user. Websites with responsive web design adapts the layout according to the device used. As such, here is one more item for your checklist:

Is your website with responsive web design?

Critical Components of a Good Website

Over the years, when we did audits of many a website, we did discover many critical components missing. It is quite disappointing to find some web creators not providing their best for their clients, or perhaps they too are not aware of these critical components. Nevertheless, do know that these components are essential for the success of your business website.

They will make your business website appealing not only to visitors but also search engines. Go through this list and make sure all are in place. If not, include them immediately for the best results.

Easy Navigation

A website that is easy to use will encourage your visitor to stay a little longer and explore the site. Keep the navigation straightforward; for example, clear menu options that are always displayed at the same location on every web page.

Vital Information ‘Above The Fold’

Not everyone will bother to scroll down, go to a next page, or click on a link to another page unless you made it so enticing for them to from the home page. So it is best to place all the important information on the home page for the visitor.

All Links Working

It is frustrating to visitors and search engines when a link is broken. Make sure all links are working well at all times.

Home Page, Products Page, Services Page, Testimonials, About Page and Contact Form

Do ensure that, at the very least, all these pages exist on your business website, and filled with useful and timely content.

Lead Visitors Through The Site

Once you captured your visitor’s attention, lead them to where you want them to go on your site. Do this in order to eventually have them make a purchase.

Specific Instructions

Be specific with any instructions on any page on your business website.

Multiple Calls To Action

Encourage your visitors to take action throughout your site. Of course, do it elegantly. Don’t be loud, or scream at your audience, or be tacky. Use motivating words like ‘Call now’, ‘Buy now’, etc.

Pictures Used Correctly

Pictures should match the content. Better if it provides explanation of the content. After all, a picture tells a thousand words. Using pictures correctly includes proper sizing of pictures as well as captions for it.

Non-Distracting Design

The design should not distract the visitor from the content, unless the design is the content. For example, do not use animated background that is too distracting. Also, keep the fonts simple and standard. Do not use funny looking fonts, try to avoid italics, and preferably do not underline any text.

Dark Text On A Light Background

Studies have found that people find it easy to read when the text is dark and the background is of a light color. Keep that in mind, and make it standard on your business website.

Multiple Ways To Contact

A contact number and/or email address should be available on every page, discreetly and elegantly positioned at the same area. This makes it easy for the visitor should he or she decides to contact you.

Trust Factors

Your business website is the best place to showcase your trust certificates and awards. If possible, find a way to highlight this on your home page. If not, have at least a link to web page that features these.

Testimonials

Nowadays, testimonials are displayed on the home page, especially websites with responsive web design. Some even make the testimonials displayed using a slideshow. Testimonials are a great way to build trust for your brand. When visitors see what others have to say about your brand, they feel confident to do business with you.

Personal Branding

As discussed in Your Simple Digital Marketing Plan chapter, a strong brand is a valuable asset. Besides a logo and a slogan, there are many other elements that make up your brand.

For example, in your About Us section of your website, pictures of you, the management, and your staff communicates who you are, as a brand, to your audience. Other forms of communicating your brand include branding vehicles, online videos, audios, social media, and many more.

Optimization for Keywords

I have said it before, and I will say it again for I believe repetition to be a good learning style. You must take the time and effort to do keyword research. This is so that your keywords are optimized properly.

Using good keywords is a huge plus for search engines. For example, one way of using your keywords is to have them in your business website with title tags, meta tags, the URL, the headers and description of a web page.

Also, ensure that all the text on your business website is search engine-optimized with strategic use of keywords. At the same time, beware of duplicate content. This can have detrimental effect on search results of your website.

Relevancy

Search engines love it when websites contain content that has relevance to the main subject of the website. You can create relevancy by starting broad, and then drilling down within themes. Tip: Always optimize for one keyword per page. Don’t do it for multiple keywords per page.

Lastly, Avoid Flash and Frames

These do not add any value to your business website, especially when optimizing for search engines.

By now, with the implementation of the above critical components, your business website should naturally move closer to the top of search engine results.

But a word of caution here. Do not just rely on this alone.

You need to also implement the other tasks in your digital marketing plan; for example, maintaining a blog, regular updates on social networks, implementing other Web 2.0 applications, submitting articles with links back to your site in order to increase traffic, building quality one-way links, etc.

There are two more one-time tasks to discuss, and it will be in the second part of this article. It is in two parts because having all the information in one part is too long, and I have had feedback that it is too much to read at one go.

How To Promote A Business Online? Part Two

6 Things You Should Be Doing

Over the 26 years that I have been doing Digital Marketing, I have met business owners who simply set up a website, did nothing to promote their business online, and just hope for the best.

Then there are those who think they know how to promote a business online. So they create a website and set up a few social network accounts. Unfortunately, this group thinks that posting on their social media once in a blue moon is good enough for people to find them.

Of course, there are those who have an inkling what Digital Marketing is all about. But they only use a select few techniques to drive traffic to their site.

Which of these types of business owners are you?

At the same time, I must say that I totally empathize with all types of business owners. The reason is they are not in the business of marketing – whether online or offline. So it is not reasonable to expect them to know much about it or be an expert at it. As a business owner, it is understandable that as you are focusing more on your core duties and responsibilities to run and grow your business. And leave the marketing to the experts like me. Still, it is worthwhile to know at least what online marketing is all about. So it is good you are reading and learning more about it now.

There are times when you will find that many internet marketing efforts require some testing to find out what works and what does not work. For example, Facebook Ads with hard selling copy may work for a certain target audience, but may not for another. All that testing will take up a lot of your time and effort.

The good news is – with this series – How to Promote A Business Online? (start reading from part one if you have not done so) – you are given an enormous advantage. From a wide variety of tried and tested internet marketing methods, I have narrowed it down to a few for you to start. These are ideal for you to see real results in your sales.

Here, I present 6 Things That You Should Be Doing to enhance your digital marketing efforts. Not many know of all these 6 tried and tested marketing methods. And everyone and every business should be doing them. So when you do apply all six of them, you can produce some serious results.

And – drum roll – here they are:

1.   SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

2.   Social Media

3.   Blogs

4.   Online Videos

5.   Build a List

6.   Free Reports

1.    Basic SEO (Search Engine Optimization)

Did you spend a lot of money for your business website to be created?

Whether you did spent a lot, not so much or very little, the more important question is – did you spend enough or at all for your website to be search engine optimized?

If your website is not search engine optimized, it will never get ranked high in the search results. The effect of this is nobody will know the existence of your business website, your business and your brand.

How to Promote Your Business Online? - 6 Things You Should Be Doing - Part Two - SEO - Search Engine Optimization
SEO – Search Engine Optimization

SEO is an important digital marketing tool to promote your businesses online. More and more people are becoming aware of this, and are doing it for their websites, whether by themselves or hiring professionals to help.

So how does SEO help to promote your business online?.

Search engines use an Internet bot, often called a spider, to collect information on the World Wide Web, and build lists. This includes strategic use of keywords, backlinks, and more.

When your website does not have any strategic use of keywords, plus a significant number of links to your site, and many other SEO elements, your website will have a hard time achieving ranking on the first page of search results. Without online visibility, it will be virtually impossible for people to learn about your business through online means.

Important Tip for SEO!

Do not use sluggish elements like Flash.

For years, I have highly recommended to many clients to not have Flash on their website, especially the home page. While it can look impressive, websites with Flash do not get indexed properly by search engines. The simple truth is that search bots cannot read Flash content.

Nowadays, having Flash can even hurt your search rankings as search engines have begun blacklisting such sites. They regard these websites as deceptive, having no keywords, and no content.

2.   Social Media

Today, for every business, Social Media is a must have.

In 2013, Jayson DeMers reported on Forbes that:

“Investment in Social Media Will Become a Necessity, Not a Luxury”

Today, those prophetic words have proven to be true. Social Media is a priority for your business, and complements as well as augments your SEO efforts. It will improve your website’s search rankings and allow your business to be found.

Social Media

As part of your marketing and PR (public relations) mix, it will help your business to increase brand exposure and enhance brand awareness. This makes it a great tool to establish a stronger brand for your business.

You can use social media to build a community of people interested in your products and services. It is an excellent tool to share your expertise and knowledge on your products and services as well as interact and receive valuable customer feedback.

All business owners know that marketplace insight is very valuable. With social media, you can get this valuable information direct from the source. Never before has businesses had such access that can help improve and grow the business.

Social media has many other benefits. It can also be used to drive traffic to your website, generate leads, and boost sales by converting loyal fans to customers.

3.   Blogs

Blogging

Important Tip for SEO!

Search engines Love new and fresh content!

Blogging is one way of keeping content fresh on your website. This will enhance your chances of being at the top of search engines. Also, you can blog such that your content has all the right long-tailed keywords.

In addition, when you blog posts that are interesting and captures the attention of people, you can build a following. This following is immediately your potential customers ready and ripe for you to market your products and services to.

After all, when they follow you, it means they have an interest in what you are offering to them. Again, just like social media, they can be a valuable source of feedback and marketplace insight.

4.   Online Video

Online videos are the next wave in content marketing.

Online Video

You can create a simple video using text slides, and do a voiceover with or without background music. Or a video presenting your products and services. The content for video is virtually limitless.

And the best part is that more and more people love watching videos rather than read a lot of text. Hence, you now have another hot digital marketing vehicle to reach numerous customers and prospects. For maximum effectiveness, just be sure to place the online video where people can find it; e.g. social media, your website, YouTube, etc.

5.   Build A List

Build Your List

One of the goals of your online marketing plan should be to build an email list. It is a database of people who opt in; that is they consent to receiving emails from you about your products and services.

To capture such data and increase your email list, you need an autoresponder. This is an indispensable tool for all businesses. It saves time for you because it is there on a page of your website, twenty four hours a day, seven days a week, ready to accept input from people who wish to sign up and receive emails from you.

It is a set of standardized letters that are set up once, and the necessary contact with each new individual who opts into your email list is taken care of automatically. Hence, it is actually very good for lead nurturing that is absolutely essential in demand marketing.

6.   Free Reports

Everyone loves free stuff, especially when there is some valuable information available that is pertinent to their interests. When you offer free reports on a particular area of interest to your potential customers, you will firstly establish yourself as an expert in that particular field.

Free Stuff

Of course, first you need to create reports that are of value to others because they offer useful information. When you have that, you can offer them on your website. Get people to provide their name and email address (at the very least) in exchange for a free report. As you can guess by now, this is another way to build your email list.

Conclusion

When you apply the above 6 Things You Should Be Doing, you will find that your website will be placed higher in search engine results ranking.

As a result, more and more people will be able to find you on the Internet, and connect and engage with you. You will now have more opportunities to communicate with them, and convert them into customers.

I am sure you noticed that this is just an overview of the 6 Things You Should be Doing. There will be more details in future blog posts. Do sign up for my newsletter to be updated. Or Connect With Me on Social Media where I will post updates, too.

How To Promote A Business Online? – Introduction – Part One

How To Promote A Business Online? A series of articles that will help business owners (or anyone with a website) to learn what are the essential strategies to help create awareness of your brand, to have high online visibility for your website and brand

How To Promote A Business Online? Part One

Your Customers Are Searching For You Online … Can They Find You?

Are you a local business owner? Or a business targeting a specific region?

Over the past few years, have you noticed a drop in demand for your products or services?

Or perhaps you are a new business, and sales has been really slow or not at all?

In my years of experience, I have met many businesses that were facing one of the above two situations. Of course, there were many other situations a business could be facing. Some businesses could be doing well and yearn to do better but do not know how to achieve that growth.

Whichever one of these situations that you are in, this series – How To Promote A Business Online – is for you. You will learn ways to increase brand exposure, Enhance Brand Awareness, draw traffic to your website, engage with people who are interested in what you are selling, and tactics to heighten the chances of converting prospects into customers.

To help you achieve all that, I will share with you the following:

Before all that, I will share with you why traditional marketing doesn’t work anymore, and why it is imperative that you start marketing online.

Traditional Marketing Is Not Working Anymore

The Internet revolution is well under way, and the way to reach and communicate with your target audience must change. Today, your target audience that you seek has become increasingly fragmented due to new technologies that allow them to experience media in myriad platforms.

The fact of the matter is that traditional media such as television, radio, magazines, and newspapers are well on their way to the fate of the dinosaurs. Advertising on traditional media to reach your market may work in the past, but it is no longer as effective as before, and will not bring in business as expected. This is particularly true for print media that many people do not pay attention to anymore.

Businesses that are still using such outdated forms of advertising are throwing away many thousands in expenses on ineffective marketing every month. It is easy to do a quick survey to find out if this is true. Simply ask a few people where their copy of the Yellow Pages is. The answers will astound you.

Some may say that they have it in some storage area, gathering dust. Some may have thrown it away (may even cite waste of space as a reason). How does that make you feel about the money you’re spending?

So where are people going to when they need to find products and service?

How To Promote A Business Online? - People are searching online to buy products and services
People are shopping online

The answer is the Internet.

They are scouring the Internet to connect with their friends and family, and search for products and services they need. So businesses that want to reach out to existing customers and have new customers find them simply must have a quality online presence. And this means not just having an ineffective website that looks like it was done as a school project.

Today, most websites are well thought out. The design, layout and content are interesting and informative. The interface and experience are personable. Due to the fact that many people now surf the Internet on mobile devices, many websites have become what is known as responsive websites.

All these effective websites utilize a myriad of savvy digital marketing techniques that improve their search rankings and make them stand out from their competitors. For example, if you have a site with no keywords in it and almost no backlinks, you are missing the boat and will never get to the top of the search engine results.

And having a website alone is not enough for your business nowadays. You need to be on social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google+, Pinterest, Youtube, etc., where your target audience is hanging out and communicating. Social media enables you to reach out and communicate with your target audience on a personal level. This is very powerful, and has never been available with traditional media.

Of course, besides having a website and being on social networks, there are other digital marketing techniques and strategies that you must do. We will discuss and explore all these in the rest of this series.

Why Is Internet Marketing Important?

In every form of media, there are specific marketing strategies that apply to that particular media. The Internet is no exception.  In order to get traffic to your website, you need to stay on top of these digital marketing strategies, and implement them. Otherwise, you’ll miss out on one of the most efficient and lucrative sources to get new customers for your business.

In my years of experience, I have encountered many local business owners who did not apply any digital marketing strategies to grow their customer base. This is simply because they have no idea what needs to be done.

It is understandable as digital marketing is so new and foreign to most business owners. They are so busy running their business, managing their staff, and taking care of their clients. And that is all right as they should rightly focus on their core business.

How To Promote A Business Online? - Which strategies to use? Where to start? Are many of the questions business owners often ask
Which strategies to use?

Some don’t even know where to start. Most don’t have the time to learn what digital marketing is all about. Plus, it is constantly evolving. So to keep themselves updated takes up quite a lot of time and effort.

Then there are those who know and understand the value of digital marketing, and how it can bring increasing returns to their businesses. They are aware of some digital marketing strategies, but don’t have the time and resources to do it. Like the other business owners mentioned in the previous paragraph, they are bogged down by the running of their business, staff management, and providing the best services and products to their existing clients. They, too, know that this is an arena where it is always evolving.

To find out if you are familiar with digital marketing, ask yourself the following questions:

  • What are long-tailed keywords?
  • What is keyword density?
  • What is Web 0? And Web 3.0?
  • How do you set up an autoresponder?
  • How do you change the tags on your website?
  • How do you create videos and audios for your website?

If you don’t know the answers to the above questions, don’t panic. It is okay.

It is absolutely normal. You, like most business owners, have wisely spent your time focusing on your core role; that is to manage your business and ensure it become successful. You have mastered other aspects of your business that were crucial to your business.

But now, you need to learn more!

It is time for you to discover what needs to be done in order to have an effective Digital Marketing Plan for your business.

The Importance of Having a Good Online Presence

Today, most local business owners are running lean and hungry. Hungry for more business. Hungry for that sales phone to ring. Hungry for more customers to walk in through the door.  But the economic and business landscape is always changing, always in constant flux.

Today, reaching your target market cost-effectively is nothing like it was a decade or decades ago. Business owners need to understand these changes, adapt accordingly, and meet the challenges they are facing. This is essential to the survival of your business

Case Study:

In 2011, I was the newly appointed Business Development Manager of a local business that was spending thousands of dollars on Yellow Pages advertising. The business has been doing that for the previous past years, and nobody was tracking if this expenditure was bringing in any new customers.

A quick survey and phone calls to our current clientele proved that not one customer used the Yellow Pages to search and find that local business. Needless to say, when it was time to renew the advertising contract, I put a stop to it, and saved thousands of dollars for the company.

There would be those who are not savvy at digital marketing, and would be at a loss as to what to do with that big budget so as to get the best possible returns on the company’s marketing investment. All that money could be poured into online strategies that might either fall flat or backfire. The learning curve is sharp and unforgiving.

As someone who had been practicing digital marketing for 25 years, I knew and understood that this big budget needs to be re-channeled to advertising on the Internet so as to get the best possible returns on the company’s marketing investment.

Just like me, there are entrepreneurs who realize that the Internet is the future. In August 2014, Google reported that they now process “over 40,000 search queries every second on average, which translates to over 3.5 billion searches per day and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide”. This number grows by more than 40% to 60% each year. In fact, 81% of people search online before they make a purchase.

What is more important is that a large majority of these people search online for local services and products before making a buying decision. Very few turn to the local newspaper to find what they want. Even fewer think of the Yellow Pages anymore. This is why it is essential that local business owners need to have an online presence, and have effective digital marketing in place.

Unlimited Potential for Growth

Understanding how digital marketing works, and using the tactics and techniques correctly to promote your business can easily result in huge increase in sales. When your digital marketing strategies work effectively and there is increased sales, you create positive impact on your own business that can have positive effect on the world around you.

When you encourage more money to be spent locally by having a steady stream of new customers, you also improve your local economy. There could be fewer downsizing and layoffs. Sometimes, new jobs could even be created.

How To Promote A Business Online? - Digital Marketing can lead to High Potential Exponential Profit Growth
High Potential Exponential Profit Growth

In fact, no matter how the economy changes, because you are able to reach those who are interested to buy from you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and your business will grow. And that is what effective marketing is all about!

Digital marketing has the potential for exponential profit growth. If you’re not ready for your business to double or even more, stop reading now!

Important Statistics You Need To Know

Statistics are great for understanding your customers. Here are some statistics that show you how people are using the Internet to search for what they want:

  • Over 5 billion searches occur every day, and 1 in 3 searches is local.
  • 91.5% of people searching on Google will choose a business that is on the first page of their search results.
  • 5% of clicks go to the #1 ranked site of search results.
  • 6% of clicks go to the #2 ranked site of search results.
  • 4% of clicks go to the #3 ranked site of search results.

From the above statistics, you can see how important it is to have a strong online presence, to be ranked high for search results. Thus, it is imperative that your business develop and implement an effective digital marketing strategy. This is so that those looking for products and services that you provide can find you. Even when they don’t know your brand or business name.

Making Changes to Your Online Marketing Methods

You would like to get maximum results from your digital marketing plan and strategy. To achieve that, you will need to make some pretty drastic changes to your digital marketing methods. To help you with that, here are some insider facts you need to know.

First, it is a fact that there is a potential to grow your business using digital marketing. And that potential can be phenomenal, no matter what industry you are in. You just have to learn what needs to be done, and cultivate this opportunity.

There are six extremely useful digital marketing techniques that you should be doing. Again, you have to learn these techniques. Then put them into practice and you will be able to outperform your competitors quickly.

Have you ever heard of Online Local Domination? Well, this is a goal you need to accomplish. And you can do by learning and mastering a four step process. When you follow the four step process diligently, you will have higher chances of getting the results you desire.

Every marketing effort needs a good plan, and has the best results because of it. You will need to create a Digital Marketing Plan and follow it as closely as possible. A plan is essential for managing all the crucial tasks that can take your business to the top of the search results as well as attract new customers for you.

It is critical to do an Audit of Your Past Marketing Efforts, if any. By taking the time to thoroughly analyze what you have been doing in the past, you are better equipped to create and implement a new and better digital marketing plan. Also, you can measure the progress by comparing past results to results from your new digital marketing efforts.

Most business owners can get overwhelmed by the number of tasks required from the new digital marketing plan. This need not be so. You just need to make the tasks more reasonable by breaking them down into bite-sized chunks. A good place to start is to do the Tasks that are One-Time Jobs. Especially those that are also the foundation of your digital marketing plan. For example, content for your website. Make them into a checklist and have fun ticking them off.

Once the one-time tasks are done, focus next on the tasks that repeat. These would be the long-term commitments that require monthly, weekly, or even daily attention. For example, blog updates or Facebook postings.

Speaking of these long-term tasks that repeat and require constant attention, you should consider hiring a vendor to do this role. Perhaps even the entire digital marketing plan. The reason is these tasks take up a lot of time. You need to do research to find fresh, interesting and relevant articles or spend time creating your own unique ones. Then there is the copywriting to be done. This itself is an art.

Good copywriting captures people’s attention and inspires them to act; e.g. visit your website or make a purchase. Plus, good pictures and videos not only captivate an audience but also reinforce your brand image. Now, videos are the choice form of communicating with your target audience. Videos are great as they can appeal to the senses, touches the emotions, and is easy to digest. I believe the future is Video Marketing, and will share more about this later. All this require the right digital marketing partner with the right experience, expediency and skills to help you make your digital marketing a success.

Finally, you need to create a system for tracking the results of your digital marketing efforts. More importantly, it can determine and improve your Return On investment (ROI) thereby measuring the increase in your business income.

This is just an example of how tracking your digital marketing results are useful. There are, of course, many other ways to track and measure the performance of your digital marketing efforts. By doing so, you know how your business is growing, and how to further enhance the growth through digital marketing.

That’s all I have for the introduction. I know it’s lengthy. I did think of breaking this introduction into two parts, but thought better not to. After all, it is an introduction. And also I was concerned that when done in two parts, the essence of the points may be diluted.

I hope you enjoyed reading this. Please share this post. And of course, definitely leave a comment for me. I would love to hear from you.

7 REASONS WHY BUSINESSES SHOULD INVEST IN SEO

SEO & Digital Marketing Consultant Singapore's 7 Reasons Why Your Business Should Invest in SEO

7 REASONS WHY BUSINESSES SHOULD INVEST IN SEO

SEO & Digital Marketing Consultant Singapore's 7 Reasons Why Your Business Should Invest in SEO

Once, at a meeting with a business partner, one of the executives raised a question – Is SEO dying? His question was born from few articles he read that claim SEO is on its deathbed. My answer to him was that this is not true, and chances are SEO will be around for a long time.

The reason? People are constantly scouring the World Wide Web for information and things that are relevant and pertinent to them. And it is in the interest of search engines to provide these search results to them.

I had a look at those articles the executive read, and had a good laugh. They were written as articles of sensationalism. The authors were trying to get viewers and used this tactic to capture an audience. And the funniest part? They were using SEO to do that!

In the past years while working in agencies, I have met many business owners who have heard of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) but seem to have vague ideas on why SEO should be part of their digital marketing strategies. Some even have a wrong or limited idea of what it is all about.

Search Engine Optimization is more than just being on top of search engine results. Many businesses fail to realize this, and hence, do not invest in it.

But before we go to the benefits most companies with great SEO strategy enjoy, you should be aware of what SEO is. This can be an entire topic and article. As such, I will just give a broad concept of what is SEO? SEO or Search Engine Optimization is the process of analyzing how search engines work, what people search for, the most common keywords used and how each search affects the visibility of a website. SEO allows a business to have strategies on how to carefully influence the ranking of their websites in search engines results pages.

The goal is to rank on the first page of search engine results pages like Google. This is because findings by Chitika have shown that 91.5% of people searching online chose sites that are listed on Page 1.

91.5% Choose Businesses on 1st Page - Percentage of Google Traffic by Results Page

91.5% Choose Businesses on 1st Page on Google. img src: Chitika

This means a higher chance of searchers clicking on your website (if it is on Page 1), and higher chances of acquiring sales leads that you can convert to customers. But as I mentioned, this is not all. There are more reasons to why businesses should invest in SEO, and here I present 7 of them.

Builds Your Brand Reputation

SEO gets your website on the First Page of Google and other search engines. This means your website gets high online visibility. As mentioned above, chances of people clicking on your website then becomes higher. And this drives more traffic to your website.

As more traffic goes to your website, trust in your brand builds. Brand Trust can be a very powerful thing. In the World Wide Web there are millions of businesses competing, creating stiff competition for many businesses. As more searchers visit your website, it shows that people trust your brand. A definite major plus for your brand.

Building your reputation will result in satisfied clients, who can act as your brand ambassadors. They will share about your brand and products or services to their network who are your potential customers. The word-of-mouth is a powerful tool for most sites.

For example, someone once told me he heard about Lazada, an online marketplace, from a friend. He did not visit the site or make any purchase immediately. But when the time came for him to buy something he needed, he visited the site, and bought some furniture. Imagine that! Furniture!

Not something you would buy online usually. All this happened because he trusted his friend who mentioned a site that the friend trusted.

Adding to the above, in this day and age where anyone can write glowing reviews or criticisms on any online platforms, make sure you have an effective Reputation Monitoring Strategy that can help you improve your approach for SEO. Building your reputation in the industry does not just mean being recognized by clients and other companies. It also means you are respected and you have set a standard in your SEO efforts which other companies need to exceed.

Low Cost Part of Digital Marketing

Working your way up to the rankings of search engines through organic search will ensure more traffic that can bring new and repeat sales for your business without costing too much. At least not as much as other digital marketing strategies.

Already, many digital marketing experts predicted that in 2016 as the competition in the digital world increased, so would the Cost of Online Advertising. And this has happened already. If your business already has a limited budget for digital marketing, particularly Online Paid Advertising, be ready to either struggle or buck up and increase the budget. Especially if you desire better ROI (Return on Investment). Alternatively, consider the lower-costing SEO.

Successful SEO strategy includes On Page SEO and Off Page SEO. While the latter can cost a bit more, of course depending on the amount of Off Page SEO you require, the former can be done at a much lower cost.

You need not have high end SEO applications; there are SEO applications that are free or has trial versions that you can choose from. These applications are relatively cheaper than other applications or subscriptions that you may have for your other digital marketing strategies.

Drives Better and More Traffic

Search engine results pages show significant and relevant content to keywords that consumers search for. The more relevant the keywords, the more chances that your content and site will be featured and ranked in the first pages of search engines. This will make the possibility of consumers checking out your site higher and drive more and better traffic in your site.

But wait! What do I mean by Better Traffic?

It is better traffic because the people who click and visit your website would be those who are already searching for the product or service you are offering. Not some random stumble upon your website. This means that the person already has an interest in what you are selling.

For example, if you are a hairdresser in Seoul, Korea. And you chose the keywords – Award Winning Hair Salon in Seoul Korea – and you managed to rank it on First Page of Google and other search engines.

So when someone is searching for an award winning hairdresser, they may type the exact keywords. They find your website on the First Page, they click on it, and if they like what they see, they may make an appointment. Voila! You get sales from a very targeted audience! Better Traffic!

For a website to survive the competition, generating the right type and amount of traffic is a must. Not only will it increase the ranking of the website, it will also ensure a high possibility of sales, new and repeat sales, and return on investment will be much faster. The number of click throughs will reflect on your ranking and you will be able to determine the type of traffic your site gets using analytics.

Makes Your Business More Visible

As I mentioned earlier, being on the First Page of Google and other search engines is equal to having Online Visibility.

Imagine opening a store and not advertising or marketing about it. Worse, what if the store is at an area with low human traffic? You would open your new store, and find that no one steps into your shop. It is the same in the World Wide Web.

Online Visibility is having your website seen by millions in a web space that is filled with millions of websites. Being visible allows potential clients to notice your website, check on it and have easy access to your products or services when needed.

It will give you a head start against your competitors when it comes to reaching your customers and potential customers because they can Recall Your Brand instead of others. This Online Visibility also increases Brand Awareness and Brand Recognition.

There can be opportunities to merge, affiliate or even acquire investment from larger companies when your SEO strategies make your company visible. You never know who may be on the lookout for a business to invest in.

There may be large companies who are in the same industry or have an interest in the industry you are in, who will definitely be able to find your site because of SEO efforts, and consider if your business is worth their investment. Something that you might consider.

ROI on SEO Can Be At Par With Other Strategies

In order to measure how much a business have progressed and how effective the strategy is, ROI or Return On Investment is measured and scrutinized.

ROI can help you determine which of your marketing efforts are working, which strategy looks promising and may lead to further sales, and which strategy is not working. The reason why I advocate SEO so much is because it is relatively low cost (compared to other strategies) and brings a significant result on ROI.

SEO allows your company to have a direct impact on your customers’ will and need to purchase. With content that will convince them of your company’s authenticity and effectiveness in terms or answering their needs, direct purchase will definitely happen. With more purchases made, your return will visibly show how operational your SEO effort is.

Ongoing and Long Term Strategy

As long as you have the right keywords and continuously provide quality content on your site, your ranking and visibility to clients will not decline. SEO is a long term strategy that you can use in order to achieve more than just your current goals. SEO can be used in whatever season and trend that may appear over time.

Maintaining a strategy for a long time can cost effort and money. But in the long run it can be one of your most cost effective strategies. Keeping SEO on check on the other hand is relatively easier than other strategies.

You will definitely notice any decline or improvement of your ranking in Search Engine Results Pages (also known as SERP). The ranking can change dramatically overnight; for example when any of your content gets viral on the web, you may find your site’s ranking rise drastically. And that is a very good thing to happen.

Most Businesses are Doing SEO

Yes, this is true. If you have been having your head in the sand, it is time to face the truth.

You may not be doing SEO, but your competitors are doing it. And they are getting to the First Page of Google and other search engines, capturing more of the same target market as well as new market, and getting more and more sales every day.

So if other businesses and your competitors are doing SEO, why aren’t you? Nowadays, you will barely see companies without SEO in their Digital Marketing Strategies.

It is an indispensable strategy that companies closely monitor. And keep as a closely guarded secret. Most companies, if not all, want to stay on top of any field against their competitors, and SEO is no exemption to help them achieve that goal.

SEO Tips - List of More Than 100 Directories For You to Promote Your Blog or Website for FREE by SEO & Digital Marketing Consultant in Singapore

Do you want to drive more traffic to your website?

Do you like to see your website appear on the 1st Page of SERPs (search engine result pages)?

Having your website on the 1st Page of SERPs for popular keywords or phrases that people frequently use to search for similar products or services like yours can increase the chances of visitors to your website or blog as well as be a long-term sustainable source of visitors. And to get to the 1st Page, you need to do SEO (search engine optimization).

And not just the type of SEO on your website or blog, which is also known as On Page SEO. You need to do Off Page SEO, which includes having social media accounts, online mentions, and creating backlinks for your website or blog. Just to name a few of the Off Page SEO tactics.

What Are Backlinks?

Backlinks are simply links that point back to your website or blog that is from another website on the world wide web. It is sometimes referred to as Inbound Links. Backlinks is one of the major factors toward gaining higher rankings on search engine result pages (SERPs).

The more Backlinks your website or blog has, the more you are telling search bots that your website or blog is popular or important. This is because when another website features a link to your website or blog, it is essentially a vote for your website. It is like a “thumbs up” from another source, and tells their audience that they think your website or blog is worth visiting.

Search engines, such as Google, will then give “plus points” to your website or blog, and when there is a search query relevant to your website or blog, it will appear in the list of search results. When you have a good number of quality Backlinks , there is a chance your website or blog will appear higher in ranking within that list.

Of course, technically there is more to it than just this surface level information I just wrote above. There are other things about Backlinks to consider; for example quality of Backlinks , relevance, PageRank of sites that Backlink to your website or blog, etc.

Also, please note that Backlinks are not the single determining factor for search ranking. There are many more factors to consider. But because this is a blog post about Backlinks, and specifically the purpose is to share a long list of directories for you to create the Backlinks, I will not go into all that here. Maybe in a later post?

How To Get Backlinks For Your Website or Blog?

See the long list of more than 100 directories featured below that you can access to promote your website or blog for FREE? Go to each individual link, and try submitting the url and required details of your website or blog to the directory or listing.

As mentioned above, I too frequently add Backlinks to the websites that I do SEO for, and I use this same list too. As such, I will constantly come back and review the list here. So do visit often to check out any new listing, or you can Email Me. I will add your email to my list, and send you updates. Comments welcome, too.

How SEO Consultant Singapore Ranked Digital Marketing Agency on Google’s First Page?

How SEO Consultant Singapore Ranked Digital Marketing Agency on Google’s First Page?

oojo ranked on Google's 1st Page by SEO & Digital Marketing Consultant Singapore, Timotheus Lee

Back in 2014, I co-founded OOJO, a Digital Marketing Agency in Singapore. One of the first things I set in motion was to do SEO and rank the Digital Marketing Singapore agency’s website on the 1st Page of Google and other search engines such as Bing, Yahoo, etc. It took a lot of time and effort. And my team and I managed to achieve it within 3 months only!

That is quite a feat considering our major keyword phrase is a highly competitive one, and most SEO experts will tell you that it would usually take 6 months to a year, sometimes more, to make that happen. We attributed our success due to our deep and strong knowledge of SEO, which is Search Engine Optimization.

SEO Tactics to Rank a Website on 1st Page of Google

In the early days of Internet, when I started designing and developing websites, I kind of already did SEO. But back then, I had no idea I was doing it. I did it as part of a logical way to identify the websites. For example, the title tag was to identify the name of the website and the type of products or services the brand provides.

SEO has come a long way since then. Today, there is On Page SEO where you did everything on your website to enable the search bots to find your website and know what your website is all about. And then there is Off Page SEO where it involves stuff like backlinks and social signals, all of which are to inform the search bots that the online community outside of your website thinks your website is important, too.

And then there are the basic techniques, which may rank your website somewhere but most probably not on the 1st Page of Google and other search engines such as Bing, Yahoo, etc. Advanced techniques do really deep SEO, and these are the ones that can really help rank your website on the 1st Page of Google and other search engines. Naturally, my team and I did both.

Keyword Research

SEO starts with the all-important Keyword Research. This is research to find out what keywords that people are using to find businesses, products or services like yours. There are many tools that you can use to find keywords. My team and I use Google Keyword Planner.

The results of the research showed a long list of keywords and phrases for businesses like OOJO, and the services provided by OOJO. Our team analyzed the long list, and selected our main keyword phrase – Digital Marketing Agency Singapore. We then proceeded to start On Page SEO.

On Page SEO

On OOJO’s homepage, we added the main keyword phrase – Digital Marketing Agency Singapore – into the Title Tags, Headers, Alt Tags, and Meta Descriptions. Of course, all written in a natural way. We did the same for the content. One thing to be careful is not to over-stuff the content with the main keyword phrase. Google does not like that, and will penalize a site for it.

The same is done for the other web pages for the entire website. But not every page would be using the same main keyword phrase. Depending on what the page is about, we would choose another keyword or keyword phrase, and repeat this first step of On Page SEO for that particular page.

Another On Page SEO tactic I used was to interlink the pages. This is very powerful as it indicates to the search bots that certain pages on a website are important. The importance can help with the ranking.

Index Your Site with Google, Bing and Other Search Engines

You can choose to do this step after you started on some Off Page SEO. But I prefer to get the sites I work on to be indexed by search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo as soon as possible.

An XML sitemap informs the search engines about the URLs on a website that are available for crawling and indexing. It allows webmasters to include additional information about each web page, when it was last updated, how often it changes, and how important it is in relation to the other web pages on that site. This makes the search engines crawl the site more intelligently.

These days, it is very simple to submit an XML sitemap for indexing, especially with WordPress sites. OOJO is designed with a WordPress theme. So all I did was install a plugin that helped me create the XML sitemap. After that, I submitted the XML Sitemap link to all the search engines.

Off Page SEO

Following that, we started on Off Page SEO. That includes Link Building (such as Web 2.0, Social bookmarking, directory submission, article submission, and more), getting listed on Local Business Directories, sending Social Media Signals via Social Media networks such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Google+, etc.

I am a believer that the future of Content Marketing is using Videos. Hence, I am a firm believer that every digital marketing strategy must include Video Marketing, and that includes doing Video SEO. For OOJO, we applied this digital marketing tactic and ranked OOJO’s videos on 1st Pages of YouTube Search.

Off Page SEO can be very extensive, and requires a lot of time and effort. It can and will include Crosslinking, Photo Sharing, Local Listing, Blogging and Blog Promotion. This is not an exhaustive list as there can and will be more Off Page SEO tactics. I share more about this in the courses I conduct.

OOJO Ranked on 1st Page of Google with 3 Months!

It took a lot of time and effort. My team and I worked daily, even on weekends, and extensively. And it all paid off!

In slightly less than 3 months, OOJO’s website reached the 1st Page of Google and other search engines. It has been 2 years, and our ranking still remained on the 1st Page of Google. Below you can see the screen capture of search result done on 11 November 2016.

SEO ranked OOJO on Google's 1st Page

Before reaching Page 1, OOJO depended mostly on offline promotional activities, word of mouth marketing and referrals to get leads and sales. Since reaching Page 1, OOJO has seen an increase in sales leads, many that have led to confirmed sales.

Since then, I have helped many websites reach 1st Page of Google and other search engines such as Bing, Yahoo, etc. If you like to see the same happen on your website, please do contact me and let’s discuss.
