Growing Up & Afraid to Fall

I live in Singapore. And I grew up here. The education system that I was exposed, back when I was a young boy, was only concerned about good grades.

And to achieve those good grades, failure is seen as something bad. I remember every time when we, as in my classmates and I, received our exam results, we were filled with dread.

Did we do well? Did I pass? Or did I fail?

And passing alone is not enough. In Singapore, we are told to excel. Every grade should be 100 per cent. 99 per cent is seen as a failure.

Strangely enough, the teachings of Confucius was revered here in Singapore. Someone must have missed this famous quote by Confucius.

Excellence, Then the Fall

As I graduated, and worked, I was faced with the same mentality. Employers and top management demanded the best. If you were seen to have fallen, it could be the end of your career.

Thankfully, I was blessed. I found jobs where I did well. My bosses loved me. My colleagues were inspired by me.

But, things did not last forever. I first faced the dot com bubble burst. And then the Asian Financial Crisis.

Both times resulted in my career fallen.

Rising from the Fall

Thankfully, I had become the type of person who never gave up easily. Each time I was retrenched, or went through a tough economic crisis, I would lose jobs.

And I would not lose hope. When I could not find a job, I did freelance work. Eventually, I realized that I could not be retrenched if I was my own boss.

So, I started and tried businesses. I tried private label, FBA (Fulfilment by Amazon), drop shipping, Shopify ecommerce, and few more. All the while, I was doing part time teaching.

The teaching gigs took off. And I had less time for all my business ventures. They were all time consuming, and required a lot of hard work.

I did not mind it at all. But, I changed strategy, and focused more on my part time teaching. After all, that is where the money was coming from, at that time.

When my part time teaching career stabilized, I decided to start an online business. One never knows when I may not get any more teaching gigs. So, it is good to have a side hustle.

I decided to do affiliate marketing because it is like passive income. This means that I can still do the business and my part time teaching gigs at the same time.
